Defence & Security

The CEA is responsible for missions in the service of defence and security in various fields: Nuclear warheads of the airborne and oceanic components of deterrence, nuclear reactors and cores for the propulsion of submarines and aircraft carriers, the fight against nuclear proliferation and terrorism.

The CEA’s mission is to design, manufacture, maintain in operational condition, and then dismantle the nuclear warheads that equip the French airborne and sea-based nuclear forces. The CEA is also responsible for the design and construction of the reactors and nuclear reactor cores equipping the French Navy’s ships, submarines, and aircraft carriers. It provides support to the French Navy for the in-service monitoring and operational maintenance of these reactors.

The CEA is also responsible for the supply of strategic nuclear materials for deterrence purposes.

In a rapidly changing world, the CEA also contributes to national and international security through the technical support it provides to authorities on issues of combating nuclear proliferation and terrorism, and on disarmament.

Since 2010, the CEA has provided its expertise to the Ministry of Defence in the field of conventional weaponry.
